Montero Lamar Hill (born April 9, 1999), better known as Lil Nas X, is an American rapper, singer, and songwriter from Atlanta, Georgia. He is best known for his country rap breakout single 'Old Town Road', which achieved viral popularity as part of the 'Yeehaw Challenge'[2] on the video sharing app TikTok.[3] 'Old Town Road' peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was controversially removed from the Hot Country Songs after debuting at number 19.[4][5]

Early life
Montero Lamar Hill was born in Atlanta, Georgia. His parents divorced when he was six, and he settled in the Bankhead Courts housing project with his mother and grandmother. Three years later he moved in with his father north of the city in Austell, a suburb in Cobb County. Although initially reluctant to leave, he later regarded it as an important decision: 'There's so much shit going on in Atlanta—if I would have stayed there, I would have fallen in with the wrong crowd,' he has said.[6] He began playing trumpet in the fourth grade and was first chair by his junior high years, but quit the instrument out of fear of looking uncool. Hill attended Lithia Springs High School and graduated in 2017.[7] He studied for one year at the University of West Georgia before dropping out. During this time, he stayed with his sister and supported himself with jobs at Zaxby's and Six Flags.[6]
Hill has said he began to isolate himself from 'outside-of-class activities' during his teenage years. He spent large amounts of time online in hopes of building a following as an internet personality to promote his work. Creatively, he was unsure what to focus on. He posted short-format comedy videos on Facebook and Vine,[6] and also created a Nicki Minaj fan account on Twitter: 'NasMaraj', named after Nicki Minaj's actual surname, Maraj, as well as New York rapper Nas. In 2015, he became known for his viral tweets and other fanpage, 'FactsAboutNM'. In 2017, his NasMaraj account gained attention for its interactive 'scenario threads'. These flash fiction-style threads were popularized on Twitter using the social media dashboard app TweetDeck.[8][9][10] But after media reports linked Hill to the 'NasMaraj' account, he denied that he ran it.[11][12]
Career
On December 3, 2018, he released the country rap song 'Old Town Road'. The song went viral in early 2019 due to the 'Yeehaw Challenge' meme on the social media app TikTok. 'Old Town Road' debuted at #83 on the Billboard Hot 100, later climbing to #1.[13] It also debuted on the Hot Country Songs chart at #19 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs at #36.[14]Billboard controversially removed the song from the Hot Country songs chart in March 2019. Of its decision, Billboard told Rolling Stone magazine:
Upon further review, it was determined that 'Old Town Road' by Lil Nas X does not currently merit inclusion on Billboard's country charts. When determining genres, a few factors are examined, but first and foremost is a musical composition. While 'Old Town Road' incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today's country music to chart in its current version.[15]
Another Billboard spokesperson told Genius, 'Billboard's decision to take the song off of the country chart had absolutely nothing to do with the race of the artist.'[16]
Country music star Billy Ray Cyrus has since supported Lil Nas X's 'Old Town Road' in a tweet,[17] and he is a featured vocalist in a remix of the song released in April 2019.[18]
On April 16, 2019, it was announced that Lil Nas X had broken Drake's record for the most US streams in one week. 'Old Town Road' had 143 million streams for the week ending April 11, surpassing Drake's 'In My Feelings', which had 116.2 million streams in one week in July 2018.[19]
Lil Nas X will release his debut EP, 7, in June 2019.[20]
On May 19, 2019, the 'Old Town Road' remix had been number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks.[21]

Lil Nas X is really out here making dreams come true.
On Wednesday (May 29), the rising country rapper surprised a Cleveland elementary school with a performance of his chart-topping track 'Old Town Road' after a video of the students jamming to the hit record went viral earlier this week. 'I saw y'all video, and I knew I had to come,' he told the crowd of excited children before breaking into 'Old Town Road.'
Lil Nas gave the fifth-grade students the surprise of the lives as they went absolutely wild when he walked into their school's gymnasium to close out their talent show. 'AW THESE KIDS TURNIN UP TO OLD TOWN ROAD 5 DAYS AGO AND HAD TO COME THRU AND PERFORM ONE TIME. LOVE THESE MOMENTS! Ъца,' he captioned a video of his surprise show.
Before hitting the stage, the 20-year-old rapper told Complex, 'I'm finna do the biggest show of my life and it's going to be great.'

Earlier this week, Lil Nas hinted that he had something in store for the students when he replied to their 'Old Town Road' video: 'When they want a free show.'
The rising rapper has clearly been in the giving mood recently, as he gifted his 'Old Town Road' collaborator, Billy Ray Cyrus Рђћwho hopped on the track after the song's original version was removed from the Country charts Рђћ a Maserati as a token of his appreciation last week. However, Lil Nas didn't just give the country crooner the luxury vehicle in a regular way. Oh no, he had it delivered by Postmates!
On Monday (May 20), Lil Nas surprised Billy at his Los Angeles-area home with the red convertible, alongside his Postmates driver. In a video, shared by TMZ, the 20-year-old rapper, who was outfitted in his usual country garb, is shown instructing Billy to go check out the surprise he got him as 'Old Town Road' blasts through the car's speakers. To Billy's surprise, when he walks around the corner there's his brand-spanking new ride waiting for him. 'Wait a minute. There's no way. Are you kidding me? Are you serious man?' Billy says as he hops in the driver's seat. 'Holy smokes, man. Wow!'
